Tangere humanum est (2002)

Originally for alto-sax, oboe, accordeon, piano and double bass. (also available). Rearranged with funds from NKF (Norwegian Society of Composers).

A piece commissioned by The NORWEGIAN CONCERT INTITUTE (Rikskonsertene) that was to be premiered on a tour with the norwegian contemporary trio Poing and two Estonian classical musicians on oboe and piano. I thought it would be fun to stretch the tango concept a bit in a direction that I assumed would dress Poing’s musical expertise, combinating contemporary music with other genres. First movement is very in “Piazzolla-country”, but extends in new directions. Second movement I wa ted to explore the tension between uneven time signatures and phrases that appear as if they are not in sync with the accompaniment. The third movement has a fugue/canon theme that leans stylistically in the direction of the Argentine composer and pianist Horacio Salgán, the most syncopated composer traditional tango.
